Preliminary International Arrivals for January 2002 Released

The U.S. Department of Commerce released preliminary 2002 international travel figures to the United States. Travel in January 2002 continued to contract, however, the severity of decline was abridged compared to the drop in the last four months of 2001. In January 2002 international travel to the United States dropped 20 percent to register 2,439,745 visitor arrivals, compared to 3,036,891 arrivals in January 2001.

January 2002 marks 12 straight months of contraction in international arrivals to the United States. On a positive note, the rate of decline was slowing compared to the declines reported after the September 2001 attacks. Western European arrivals contracted only 16 percent in January 2002 compared to dropping 22 percent in December 2001. Markets that have January 2002 arrival percent change figures that are nearest to the January-August 2001 percentage change figures are: Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands.

The largest drop in international arrivals in January 2002 continued to be in the overseas markets (primarily from South America and Asia). Travel from all of the top overseas countries declined in January 2002, although some continue to prove to be more resilient to the ongoing global economic downturn and from the September 11 attacks.

To learn more about the extent of the declines in international travel to the U.S., please see OTTI's analysis of the preliminary January 2002 arrivals. Included are tables that provide the number of arrivals for the month and the percent change compared to January 2001. Go to OTTI's monthly analysis at: http://www.tinet.ita.doc.gov/view/m-2002-I-001/index.html

You can also view past monthly arrival tables for 1996-2001 for the top markets by going to: https://travel.trade.gov/research/monthly/arrivals/index.html

Please watch for the February-March 2002 arrivals and analysis we hope to release shortly.
