Worst decline in the history of international arrivals for the United States

The Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI) would like to share with you a brief analysis on the September, and January-September 2001 arrivals to the United States. This data illustrates the dramatic impact that the acts of terrorism have had on international arrivals to this country. You will see that international arrivals to the United States in September were down by almost 30 percent when compared to September 2000. This was the largest single monthly decline in the history of the United States. Total international arrivals for 2001 are projected to decline by nearly 13 percent and international traveler spending will decrease by 11 percent, for a loss of $9.2 billion in 2001.

An analysis is offered for the top 12 markets. Comparisons will be made to the February 1991 declines seen in the top markets, as well. February 1991 was the previous worst single monthly decline in arrivals to the country because of the commencement of the Gulf War. Additional information is provided on the world regional declines, as well as a table that provides January-August, September, and January-September 2001 arrivals, with percentage change figures.

We hope this detailed information will be used to understand the dramatic affect the acts of terrorism had on this country. To see the analysis, please go to:

Because of the dramatic declines in September 2001, OTTI has also provided additional tables with the analysis. You will find a table with: Top Forty International Markets January-August, September, January-September 2001, and, another entitled: Arrivals from All Countries January-August, September, January-September 2001. Both may be found on our ongoing monthly arrivals data for 2001 at: https://travel.trade.gov/view/m-2001-I-001/index.html

We hope this information will prove useful. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact OTTI by sending an e-mail to: otti@trade.gov
